What Does a Multiswitch Do?

A multiswitch is a centralized satellite signal-distribution device that lets multiple rooms or apartments independently select satellite signals from one shared dish system. For conventional universal satellite distribution, a Quattro LNB provides four fixed outputs (VL, VH, HL and HH) to the multiswitch. Each subscriber output then serves a compatible satellite receiver or television satellite tuner, subject to the system design.

A multiswitch is not a network Ethernet switch, a Digital Headend, or an interactive hotel IPTV platform. Choosing the wrong distribution architecture can lead to avoidable cabling costs, channel limitations and maintenance problems.

5-Input vs 9-Input Multiswitch: How to Choose

5×8, 5×12, 5×16

Commonly used for one satellite position: four Quattro LNB polarisation/band feeds plus one terrestrial input where supported. The second number identifies nominal subscriber outputs, not the number of available TV channels.

9×16, 9×24, 9×32

Typically used for two satellite positions with eight satellite feed inputs and one terrestrial input where supported. Receiver, DiSEqC and LNB compatibility must be checked against the actual model.

Example: For a building with 64 satellite receiver outlets, engineers must determine risers, floors, permitted cascade or trunk architecture, signal levels and future spare capacity. Selecting four 16-output units solely from outlet count is not enough to verify a working design.

Satellite Signal Engineering and Commissioning

  • Record satellite positions, dish alignment, Quattro LNB model and input signal levels.
  • Prepare a signal-loss budget for the coaxial cable, distribution trunk, taps, splitters and end outlets.
  • Use correctly rated cable, F-connectors, grounding and power arrangements according to the selected components.
  • Check whether passive, active or cascaded multiswitch distribution is needed; do not add amplifiers without calculations.
  • Measure representative outlets across floors and test channel selection, BER/MER or appropriate quality indicators, and signal stability.
  • Document the input and output mapping, equipment configuration, testing results and maintenance responsibilities.

When Hotels Should Use SMATV, Digital Headend or IPTV

Multiswitch SMATV: can serve rooms with compatible individual satellite receivers or tuners when independent satellite selection is required. DVB-C or DVB-T/T2 Digital Headend: centralizes a digital channel lineup for compatible RF television tuners, often useful where a suitable coaxial network already exists. Serverless IPTV: distributes live channels as multicast streams over a managed LAN. Interactive Hospitality TV: adds welcome screens, hotel information and guest-service capabilities where supported by the selected platform.

For renovation projects, the most cost-effective approach may be hybrid RF plus IP rather than replacing usable infrastructure. Channel rights for public or hospitality distribution, PMS compatibility and actual television models must be reviewed before equipment is ordered.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a 5×16 multiswitch suitable for 16 hotel rooms?

It can provide up to 16 nominal subscriber outputs when used in a compatible configuration. The final design depends on outlets per room, receiver requirements, signal levels and expansion allowance.

Can a single Quattro LNB feed multiple multiswitches?

Yes, when a manufacturer-approved cascade or distribution design provides the required signal levels and power arrangements. Directly splitting feeds without checking specifications may cause failures.

Does a multiswitch convert satellite channels into IPTV?

No. DVB-S/S2-to-IP conversion requires a suitable IPTV gateway or headend. A conventional multiswitch only distributes satellite RF signals.

Can existing coax cables be reused for a hotel's digital television upgrade?

Potentially, after testing the cable plant, RF levels, splitting architecture and the tuners in guest-room televisions.

Request an SMATV, Multiswitch or Hotel IPTV Quotation

Send the city, number of rooms or apartments, satellite positions, number of required outlets, existing cabling, current television/receiver models and desired channels. AY Technology can review the architecture, prepare the required equipment list and define commissioning tests.
